The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
