A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
