New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
